The Vernon Building Society Poynton Brass Band battled against 20 other bands in the British Open Spring Festival Senior Trophy on the 15th May in Blackpool and emerged victorious as the 2019 champions. They were one of four bands to be promoted to the Senior Cup, led by Ryan Watkins, principal trombone of Brighouse & Rastrick. Judges Ryan Breen and Dave Lea pronounced them the ‘clear winner’.

Band chairman Frank Needham said: ‘Our success in claiming the Senior Trophy further confirms the substantial progress the band has made in the last couple of years with MD Stig Maersk. We are fortunate to have some very talented soloists and a dedicated team of players.’

Adam Pemberton of the Vernon Building Society’s marketing team said: ‘It is always an absolute pleasure to hear the band perform and to hear that they won such a prestigious award is just a testament to the talent of the band members. We continue to be a proud sponsor of the band and I look forward to their next performance.’

Following the contest and concert season, the Poynton Brass Band is recording another CD in November and hope to compete in the Wainstones Cup later in the year.
