Woodlands Methodist Care home hosted a 100th birthday party for resident Mary Beck on Saturday, 12 January.  Poynton Mayor Sarah-Jane Gilmore presented Mary with a beautiful bouquet.  Daughter Catherine, and son in law Peter, together with Mary’s 2 grandsons and 3 great grandchildren enjoyed the occasion.

After secretarial college Mary worked in the Land Army office and then in 1943 joined the WRAF.   She was a Flight Officer in charge of all equipment for the barracks and for aircraft parts and fuel at two RAF camps.  In 1951 she was posted to the Suez Canal Zone where she met her husband, George. She was married in Aden in Yemen and spent her honeymoon in Asmara in Eritrea.

After 3 years of living in Cyprus, in 1963 Mary settled down to a busy domestic life. She served Meals on Wheels with the WRVS for over 27 years and taught in Sunday school.
